La
Mothe
Saint-Héray
The history behind the pretty
town of La Mothe
Saint-Héray, set within valleys and crossed by the
"Sèvre Niortaise" river, is that it was born when two domaines
joined together, one built around the Saint-Héray church, and
the other around the La Mothe Castle, which belonged since the 12th
Century to the Lusignan Barons.
Visits:
- The wonderful "Orangerie" and
its French gardens which belonged to the La Mothe Castle which was
demolished in 1842
- The church which dates back to
1498 but was totally transformed at the end of the 19th Century. Three
gothic naves, the keys of the vault adorned with the builders' crest, a
door way ornated by a rose
- The "Maison de la
Haute-Sèvre" and the "Pont l'Abbé", an attractive
watermill, dating from 1041, totally
renovated and in perfect working order. There you will find the Tourist
Office, the municipal library and the "Rosière" museum. Just
like the "Orangerie", these buildings are often hosts to temporary
exhibitions.
